Joining Our Management
Team
At Help Now!, our management approach is truly collaborative. No one
of us believes that he/she has all the answers--we learn from each
other. There is no top-down micromanagement. We enjoy working together
to create various facets of an organization that has a unique and
worthy mission--and we enjoy seeing that mission unfold and take root.
At the same time, we have high expectations for one another. Deadlines
must be met, work product must be of the highest quality, services
must be provided to our clients in a timely, respectful, professional
manner, and all contacts with others in which we represent our organization
must be carried out with the highest degree of professionalism.
As of October 2004, we have needs for qualified professionals in
development and also to manage various aspects of operations. A
professional having outstanding advocacy skills as well as substantive
knowledge in one of our advocacy focus areas is also needed.
We are currently an all volunteer organization, and those applying
for management positions must be financially able to work for some
period of time without compensation or benefits. Our expectation
for the near future is to be able to compensate all professionals
who demonstrate skill and dedication in their performance for the
organization.
If you would like to apply for a position in our management team,
please send a cover letter by electronic mail detailing your qualifications
and attaching your resume with references to: lmkahn@helpnowadvocacy.org
Joining Our Board
We are a Board managed non-profit organization. Our management and
staff report to and are accountable to the Board. The Board sets
policy and direction for the organization. It also oversees the
organization’s finances and assists in our fundraising.
The members of our Board genuinely appear to enjoy the Board meetings
and their interactions with one another. At our meetings, the input
of each Board member is valued and weighed in a creative atmosphere.
Members of the Board serve staggered three year terms and are all
uncompensated volunteers.
As of October 2004, we are looking to expand our Board to include
additional influential members of the local community and, because
of our plans for growth, also to include at least several out-of=area
members who have a national profile.
If you would like to be considered for a position on our Board,
please read the Board Member Job Description (link below) and then
send a cover letter by electronic mail detailing your qualifications
and attaching your resume with references to: info@helpnowadvocacy.org
Volunteering as an Advocate
Serving as a Help Now! advocate affords the opportunity to see firsthand
the tremendous impact effective advocacy can have on the lives of
people who, for a variety of reasons, are not equipped to advocate
for themselves. Achieving needed results for such people provides
a great sense of personal satisfaction as well.
Prospective advocates will be screened carefully to see if their
past experience lends itself to becoming an effective advocate.
They will also be subject to criminal background checks because
of the vulnerable populations with which our organization deals
and the sensitive nature of some of our work on their behalf.
All those accepted to become advocates undergo a comprehensive
training. This will include training on dispute resolution technique
and negotiation, interview technique, office forms and procedures,
as well as information about our focus populations and their needs.
This training, in part, will be provided by our executive director,
Larry Kahn. Larry has previously taught negotiation technique to
university, corporate, church, and professional groups around the
country. His negotiations work has received coverage in the national
media.
Below you will find a link to a page which describes the job responsibilities
of our volunteer advocates. There is also a link to our volunteer
application form. If you are interested in applying to become an
advocate, please click on the e-mail link below and send the completed

Volunteering in Operations
Serving as a Help Now! volunteer in operations is critical to sustaining
the organization. Without the support of our operations volunteers,
we would be unable to do our advocacy program work. Operations volunteers
perform various internal functions. These include such things as
assistance on grant research and writing, fundraising efforts, reception,
data input, internet research, inquiry response, public relations,
filing, typing, assisting with finances, and representing the organization
to others in the community. Prospective operations volunteers will
be screened carefully for past experience and/or ability in the
various facets of operations. They will also be subject to criminal
background checks.
All those accepted to become operations volunteers will undergo
training on office forms and procedures, data input, grants, and
fundraising. This training will be provided by our executive director,
Larry Kahn, and our director of operations, Steve Jorgensen. Steve,
has previously overseen the operations of large organizations that
relied, in large part, on the work of volunteers. He has won awards
for managerial excellence, and the organization he most recently
managed won national awards for organizational excellence.
Below you will find a link to a page which describes
the job responsibilities of our volunteers in operations. There
is also a link to our volunteer application form. If you are interested
in applying to become a volunteer in operations, please click on
the e-mail link below and send the completed application form as
an attachment to your e-mail.
